Open water events called ‘swimming marathons’ are held outdoors, such as the sea or lake, instead of a separate lane.

The individual competition is divided into men’s and women’s 5, 10, and 25km, and the longest distance event, 25km, takes almost 5 hours even for male players.

Open water was adopted as an Olympic event in 2008.
